Lauri is a Finnish and Estonian masculine form of the Latin Laurentius, meaning “from Laurentum”, an ancient place in Italy. Its familiar association with laurel comes a step further back: the place name is probably related to Latin laurus, “laurel”. That makes “from Laurentum” the direct explanation, with laurel as a related image. The Finnish pronunciation is /ˈlɑu̯ri/, two syllables: Lau-ri. The a and u move together in the first syllable rather than forming separate beats; the stress falls there too. That broad opening followed by a brief -ri gives Lauri a flowing shape despite its five-letter spelling.
